Healthy eyes require adequate lubrication, protection and nourishment from a thin layer of tears at all times. When not enough tears are present to cover the eye, a condition called dry eyes may develop. This condition can compromise the quality of vision as well as interfere with your daily activities. At the office of Chicago My Optical, we’ll determine if you’re affected by this condition and recommend an appropriate course of care to restore visual comfort and function.
Dry eyes can occur for a number of reasons; either the eye fails to produce enough tears, the quality of tears is poor or the tears evaporate too quickly. This can be attributed to factors such as aging, the use of certain medications, medical conditions like diabetes and arthritis, and conditions that make it difficult to blink, such as Bell’s palsy. Dry eyes can also occur if you spend too long looking at a computer or microscope, as well as exposure to windy, smoky environments.
If you’re experiencing stinging, burning or scratchy eyes, notice there is mucus surrounding your eyes, or you’re experience intermittent tearing, be sure to discuss these symptoms with our office. Diagnosed cases of dry eye are sometimes addressed with artificial tears in the form of eye drops and ointments to help alleviate discomfort and keep the eyes moist and healthy. Anti-inflammatory medications may also be recommended for some patients. It’s also helpful to wear sunglasses or protective goggles to help reduce exposure to wind and sun, which can dry your eyes. By using a humidifier if you live in a dry climate, you can retain moisture in your living space to reduce the symptoms of dry eyes.
