Eye Physician in Niles Illinois
Amblyopia is a vision problem that is found in 2% to 3% of children. At Chicago My Optical, our
eye physician in Niles Illinois, Dr. Young Kim or Dr. Kristin Colonna, can give your child a complete eye exam, and determine whether or not he or she is having any problems with amblyopia or other vision problems.
People commonly refer to amblyopia as lazy eye. It is a vision condition in which one of the eyes has reduced vision because that eye and the brain do not work properly together. Amblyopia can cause vision loss and is the most common cause of visual impairment in children. This vision problem is believed to develop early on during a specific period and a child’s visual development. Unless it is treated while the child is still young, amblyopia will continue on into adulthood and can cause visual impairment throughout the patient’s lifetime. Amblyopia can be caused by several different conditions that affect the normal visual development of the eyes. Strabismus is a common cause for amblyopia, and is actually an imbalance in the way the eyes are positioned. This condition tends to run in families. When one eye does not function as well as the other, the brain will learn to ignore symptoms of the weaker eye, and eventually vision will be lost. Symptoms of amblyopia in children can include: eyes that are turned in or out; eyes that do not appear to be moving together; poor depth perception; or poor vision in one eye. Our
eye physician in Niles Illinois can diagnose amblyopia during your child’s regular eye exam. Treatment for amblyopia differs depending on your child specific vision situation.
